What They Are Saying

History and Skills

With almost two decades of experience, Jason has completed multiple projects of all sizes using a variety of technologies. He has expertise in fantasy sports application development including building games for ESPN and the NFL.

Jason has been programming for about 18 years and creating online fantasy games and sports communities for the last 10 years. Five years were spent at ESPN where he worked on every fantasy game they produced. The last two years at ESPN his team was also directly responsible for around 40 fantasy games a year, including the draft-and-manage basketball and baseball games, as well as the NCAA Tournament Challenge game which had over a million users.

After ESPN Jason left to become the lead Rails developer and co-founder of FanNation.com, a community-based sports website, which was purchased by Sports Illustrated within its first year. Using Rails Jason also produced fantasy games and online platforms for NFL.com and NBC, built the web platform for the United States Olympic Committee, and programmed several social sites for Entertainment Weekly, AOL, and Time Warner.

After several years Jason left FanNation and now develops his own products as well as several web development and fantasy consulting projects for select clients.

Traffic wise, some of Jason's larger Rails sites were the NFL Moderated Chat application which got around 11 million page views over a weekend. The NFL.com Fantasy Games were very stat heavy and could get into the hundred-thousands of pageviews on a given weekend as people checked their rosters. FanNation was averaging several million unique users a month once it integrated with Sports Illustrated. The USOC site was also averaging over a million unique users as the the Olympics got nearer. Other projects have ranged from the lower end (at about 2-4 uniques a day) on up to thousands of active users.

On the technical side Jason has been using Rails exclusively for the last 8 years, TEA for the 5 years at ESPN (it's the language all Disney properties use) and PHP before that. He is most familiar with MySQL and has about a decade of extensive experience with it but also has 5 years of experience interfacing each with Oracle and SQL Server.

Jason has helped devise and implement various caching strategies in Rails that have included page / action / fragment caching both with and without MemCache, some also used separate Akamai-backed asset servers. He has enough knowledge of Linux, web server architecture, and optimizing Rails environments to set up basic ones and knows enough to get around once they are set up.

Jason hand-codes responsive HTML and CSS, is familiar with Twitter Bootstrap, and can take a Photoshop or InDesign mock, slice it, and code the CSS associated with it as well as take existing styles and apply them to new elements. From a Javascript side he is very familiar with JQuery, both in and out of a Rails environment and has experience with AJAX, XML, polling, and APIs.

Jason also has moderate experience coding native apps for both the iPhone and the Android, as well as experience implementing PhoneGap and other HTML cross-platform based solutions.
